Findability: Testing your IA
Create a solid information architecture, and test the findability of topics on your website using card sorting and tree testing.
When creating an initial sitemap, conducting a card sort will help you use terms and organizational logic that is clear to your audience.
Note: OptimalSort is an excellent card-sorting software; you can also print out and sort the cards with paper.
Tree testing (or ‘reverse card sorting’) is a usability technique to test the findability of topics on a website.
Would your users expect the “About” section of your site to contain contact information, or would they expect it in the “Location and Hours” tab? Tree testing allows you to further improve on your site’s information architecture.
Note: Optimal Workshop’s Treejack is our tool of choice for tree testing.
