UX Research Framework

A UX research framework gives your study a clear focus. It starts with one overall goal, supported by UX themes that guide what you examine across every research source.

question mark plus research equals good outcome

Why use a UX research framework?

UX themes are not problems you already know exist. They are areas to investigate, so research can uncover both known and unexpected usability issues. Using the same themes across site analytics, support requests, and user testing makes it easier to combine the evidence and turn it into clear, prioritized recommendations.

The Three Parts of a Framework

Set a Research Goal

What the research needs to learn.

User Segments & Stories

What users need to accomplish and who to hear from.

UX Themes

The areas you examine to see how well the experience works.

What do you want to learn from the research?

The goal describes what the research should help you understand: where users have difficulty, why it happens, and what could make the experience clearer and easier. The strongest understanding comes from combining behavioral data, existing feedback, and direct observation.
